The Department’s Metabolism and Endocrinology Unit of the Department of Clinical Sciences has an in-patients section that receives about 2500 patients per year, and an out-patients centre that deals with approximately 12000 patients per year.

The division has seven senior physicians and sixteen residents who care for people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes, and other endocrinopathies. The clinic is also connected to the Laboratory of Endocrinology, which consists of 250 m2 and is fully equipped to carry out genetics, molecular and cellular biology, and immunological research. In the last two decades, the analysis of genetic susceptibility and the characterisation of the autoimmune response in type 1 diabetes has been among the major research topics of the Laboratory. Currently, three post-doctoral researchers, six PhD students, and three technicians participate in this research.

The initial patient enrolment for this project will also involve other diabetology units from a network that encompasses 15 clinical centres dedicated to diabetes. All of us act from within the Foundation for Diabetes Endocrinology and Metabolism, DEM (http://www.dem.it), a non-profit organisation, that undertakes initiatives to promote, carry out and disseminate research studies, and which also organises central co-ordination.
