Lyon team members

The team working on the project is headed by Professor Charles Thivolet, Director of the Department.

The Department of Endocrinology and Diabetes is located in a hospital of 1200 beds and has an in-patients section that visits about 1800 patients per year, and an out-patients centre that visits approximately 5000 patients per year.

The division has four senior physicians and 2 permanent residents and 2 visiting residents operating in caring type 1 and type 2 diabetes, and endocrinopathies. The clinic is also connected to the Immunology of Diabetes Laboratory at INSERM449 located at Laennec Faculty at a walking distance from the department. In the last two decades, the analysis and characterisation of the autoimmune markers in type 1 diabetes has been among the major research topics of the Laboratory by studying first degree relatives of type 1 diabetic patients and an experimental model of autoimmune diabetes, the NOD mouse.

Lyon at night

We analysed several preventive strategies in this model including oral tolerance with insulin alone or conjugated to mucosal adjuvants. Currently, two senior researchers, two PhD students and three technicians participate into ongoing research.

The initial patient enrolment for this project will also involve other diabetology units from Lyon and immediate surroundings which encompasses 6 clinical Centres dedicated to diabetes. Since, type 2 diabetes concerns mostly general practioners, participation of several active physicians will be encouraged individually or through a collaborative network.
