The Diabetes and Genetic Epidemiology Unit (DIGY), which forms part of the Department of Epidemiology and Health Promotion (ETEO) at the National Public Health Institute (KTL) acts as the Action LADA co-ordination centre for Finland.

The National Public Health Institute (KTL) is a scientific research institute and expert body that falls within the authority of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health. The institute’s main aims are to study, observe and improve the health of the Finns.

The Department of Epidemiology and Health Promotion (ETEO) is responsible for studying national diseases, risk factors behind them and preventive measures. The principal national diseases in Finland are heart and vascular disease, cancer and diabetes.

In its turn, the Diabetes and Genetic Epidemiology Unit (DIGY) focuses on the study of diabetes and diabetes-related diseases.

The main areas of research cover a wide range of topics including genetics, prevention, environmental impact, complications and mortality rates.

The research team working on the project in Helsinki is headed by Dr Cinzia Sarti together with statistician Irma-Leena Notkola.

Patient recruitment and data collection is carried out in different local health centres across Finland. The centres are located in (see Map):

The local health services provide the co-ordination centre in Helsinki with facilities and medical expertise especially for the implementation of the third part of the study. The National Public Health Institute provides trained nurses to conduct filed work. In Kuopio the study is being conducted in collaboration with Kuopio University. All our nurses are specialised in research work having acquired considerable experience in epidemiological research over the years.
