In accordance with the statutes the major task of the German Diabetes Research Institute is to study the aetiology, prevention, diagnostics and therapeutic options of diabetes mellitus and its acute and chronic complications, and to spread new scientific evidence to physicians, doctors, diabetes-educators, nurses, dietitians, other health care providers, and last not least to the people with diabetes and their families.

Three Scientific Departments of the German Diabetes Research Institute work together to achieve these goals:

Clinical Department and University Hospital
(Director: Prof. Dr. W. Scherbaum)

Department of Biochemistry and Pathobiochemistry
(Director: Prof. Dr. D. Müller-Wieland)

Department of Biometrics and Epidemiology
(Director: Prof. Dr. G. Giani)

Dusselfdorf

Research of the Institute is focussed on the epidemiology, the pathogenesis and therapy of diabetes mellitus. Specifically associations between immunological, inflammatory and fat-distribution related parameters, as well as mechanisms of insulin action and secretion are studied.

 Main areas of work:

  • Immunology of diabetes, atherosclerosis, obesity and nutrition
  • Regulation of inflammatory processes in diabetes
  • Molecular mechanisms of signal transduction and the role of gene regulation in insulin resistance and insulin secretion
  • Epidemiology of diabetes and its complications
  • Development of evidence-based diabetes guidelines
  • Assessment of the implementation of diabetes-guidelines, identification and treatment of high risk groups
  • Development and evaluation of diabetes training programmes and diabetes information online services.

The German Diabetes Research Institute has a unique position in Germany as a centre combining epidemiological research, basic research and clinical care for persons with diabetes mellitus.
