Roles of Centres involved in the Action LADA project

The Action LADA project has 13 partners throughout Europe based in 14 different centres. Different centres have different roles within the project bringing their various areas of expertise together to undertake the study. The study itself is co-ordinated by the team based at St Bartholomew’s Hospital in London, UK. They are one of the clinical centres who are recruiting people with diabetes into the study and are also carrying out the laboratory analysis of blood samples used to identify LADA patients in all centres.

The other centres involved in patient recruitment are based in Denmark, Northern Ireland, Austria, Finland, France, Spain. Two further centres, also involved in clinical recruitment, have addition responsibility for blood sample analysis. The Italian centre based in Rome is also concerned with the analysis of genetic markers for LADA and a centre in Duesseldorf, Germany is responsible for analysis of non-diabetes associated antibodies in LADA patients.

Several other centres are also participating in the Action LADA project. Although not actively dealing with patient recruitment they have technical and advisory roles. Swansea and Leeds in the UK are concerned with the organisation of the epidemiological aspects aimed at determining how common LADA is amongst people with diabetes in the various European countries taking part in the study.

A second centre in Germany, again in Duesseldorf, is responsible for the monitoring of the immune status of people involved in the intervention trial which is being overseen by the centre in Bracknell, UK. They are responsible for the verification and analysis of data collected in this intervention phase and are in charge of the monitoring of drug safety.

DeveloGen is the company responsible for the development of the active therapeutic agent DiaPep277™ used in the intervention trial and is partly funding the project along with the support of the European Union. DeveloGen is headquartered in Goettingen, Germany, with sites in Rehovot, Israel, and Erkrath, Germany.
